Sustainability in Pharmacy
The healthcare industry accounts for around 4.4 percent of net global climate emissions, while pharmaceutical products represent 20–33 percent of health sector emissions. Despite their mandate to protect and save lives, hospitals use vast r esources and energy-intensive equipment, operate round the clock, and generate and dispose of medical plastic waste by incineration.
Singapore’s healthcare sector was one of the top carbon emitters in the world. Fostering sustainable pharmacy practices will play a major role in how healthcare systems manage their impact on the climate situation. The future of pharmacy needs to be more sustainable, and there is more we can do collaboratively.
This session brings together some ideas and small steps toward greening pharmacy and promoting sustainability in the pharmacy profession.
